Who Is Bruno Wang? The Two Names, The Two Records, And The Gap Between Them

A Taiwan-born philanthropist and cultural patron sits on the British Museum’s patron list and funds a wellness centre at a royal property. The same person sits, under another name, on a Taiwanese wanted list and inside a Swiss freezing order. The two records never meet, and the gap between them is the only story that matters.

Two names, one person

Bruno Wang is the public name. Chia Hsing Wang is the legal name. A 2021 High Court judgment opens with a single line that does the work the brochure never does: “Mr Chia Hsing Wang, who is known as ‘Bruno Wang’.” The legal name leads, the public name follows, and the order is not stylistic. The court file, the banking leak, the wanted list and the corporate registry all carry the legal name. The charity page, the production credits and the museum patron entry all carry the public one.

No UK deed poll changing the name has been filed in any public record. The Companies House filing history for Bruno Wang Productions Limited records the person with significant control as “Chia Hsing Wang”, the legal name, across years of filings. The company trades as Bruno Wang Productions. The person who controls it is, in the registry, someone else.

What the public record says

The public record is not a single document. It is a set of records kept in separate lanes, and the person is the only bridge between them. The legal lane carries the file: a wanted listing in Taiwan, a Swiss attachment order, six Credit Suisse accounts, two British judgments. The public lane carries the brand: a 2015 charity, West End production credits, a museum patronage, a donation to a royal foundation.

The two lanes overlap in time. The Pure Land Foundation was founded in 2015, the year Andrew Wang, the father, died in London. The OCCRP Suisse Secrets investigation places the family’s Credit Suisse accounts into the last decade, which means the banking relationship was live while the philanthropy was being built. The records meet only in the timing, and the timing is not explained anywhere.

Why Bruno Wang’s name matters more than his biography

The standard profile asks where Bruno Wang was born, where he studied, what he founded. The harder question is why one person carries two names across two records that never reconcile. A 2021 Taipei Times report on the wider family file carries the legal name and the wanted listing together. The Pure Land Foundation page carries the public name and the philanthropic mission together. Neither record references the other, and no third document reconciles them.

The name is the story because the name is the seam. The public name travels in the rooms where the legal name would be a liability: the charity, the patron page, the production credit. The legal name travels in the rooms where the public name would be unknown: the court, the registry, the wanted list. The two names describe the same person to two different audiences, and the audience is the point.

The Lafayette frigate affair, in one paragraph

The file the legal name carries begins with the Lafayette frigate affair, the 1991 Taiwanese naval procurement deal in which Andrew Wang, the father, was the middleman for the French defence company Thomson-CSF. OCCRP described it as one of the largest naval contracting corruption schemes in modern history, with court testimony pointing to roughly 520 million dollars paid in kickbacks to officials in Taiwan, France and mainland China. The son was a student in California in 1993, the year the deals were signed, and the family has said he was never part of the original transaction. The record does not contradict that. The record also does not remove the listing.

The questions the record leaves open

The record leaves three questions open, and none of them is answered in the public-facing biography. The first is why the banking record and the philanthropic record use different names for the same person. The second is why a freezing order sat on the family portfolio for a decade in the same years the public profile consolidated. The third is why the wanted listing in Taiwan stayed in place after a 2024 decision dropped the related Mirage charges on limitation grounds. The 2021 High Court ruling is the only document that puts the two names in the same line, and it puts them in the order the brochure does not.

None of these questions is an accusation. Each is a gap the public record notes but does not close. The foundation’s own page does not mention the file. The court does not mention the foundation. The two records meet only in the person, and the person is the only thing the records share.

The gap, not the verdict

A reader who comes to Bruno Wang through the charity page meets a philanthropist. A reader who comes through the court file meets a joint account holder on six Credit Suisse entries and a claimant in a commercial dispute over a portfolio under Swiss restraint. Both readers are looking at the same person. The gap between the two readings is not a finding of guilt; it is a finding of structure. The structure is what the public record contains, and the structure is what the official biography does not address.

The question is not whether Bruno Wang is guilty of anything. The Taiwanese authorities have not convicted him; the family has said it would not receive a fair trial in Taiwan; the British courts have adjudicated a commercial dispute, not a criminal charge. The question is why the public name and the legal name map to two reputations, and why no document in the public record reconciles them. The gap is the story. The record does not close it.
